Gilles Aubry - The Politics of Sounds: A practical/theoretical seminar in Phonography

During this workshop, we will study the social dimension of sound production and reception, an area that could be described as the politics of sound. From this perspective, the process of selection of both the situation and object of recording is understood as significative and raises questions like what is being recorded, who is documenting it, when is it happening, what is being listened to and what is not.
The workshop will provide a basic introduction to field recording practices and techniques, followed by recording sessions on locations defined by the participants. The collected audio material will then be evaluated in group listening sessions and discussions, and finally edited into short compositions/audio essays. We might as well experiment with surround recording and mixing techniques during this workshop.
